Plotting two variables as lines using ggplot2 on the same graph

For a small number of variables, you can build the plot manually yourself:

ggplot(test_data, aes(date)) + 
  geom_line(aes(y = var0, colour = "var0")) + 
  geom_line(aes(y = var1, colour = "var1"))
